long day cycling
F when you have a destination in mind and its a fair distance away and you have no idea of the terrain you are likely to be cycling on, its a good idea to have a point somewhere in the middle where you could potentially get a train or boat to your final destination if time is running short, grace`s hire company had suggested that on this section she may well be better getting a train to the half way point then cycling on ( they were probably correct) knowing this me and grace decided to set of early and make a decision at the half way point not the other way around ( this was probably wrong)
we met in the square at Gyor at 09:30 and then got lost a couple of times trying to find our way out of town, I was laughing to myself as me and grace both had our maps out discussing route options, if my mates Bob and Gary were here they maps would have been out of our hands and squirelled away in bob and gary`s packs this way lads lol, lefts and rights are`nt my thing! grace was better and between the two of us we eventually got on the way but double/triple checking regularly modern day google maps comes in as a handy back up to the physical maps and cycle path and road signs,
The rest of that days cycling was about as mixed a bag of cycling conditions you are ever likely to come across in a day, sometimes we were cruising along brilliant tarmacked flood dike that descended to land rover track then shale dirt path back on to main roads with busy traffic, then undulating horse trails skirting railway lines and farms, some of the trail got so bad at one stage it was like desert sand totally impossible to cycle on with my touring cycle tyres, we walked and pushed that section along with a couple from Tasmania we met there who were also slowed down by the terrain and lost, I was nearly down off the bike on countless occasions and had to battle the surface far too often throughout the day, there was even a track where a felled tree had covered it an English couple we met later (they were pushing their bikes as one of them had a puncture)thought this was a deliberate ambush when they had came across it lol, me and the auld deer got rattled to bits that day my arms were tingling at the end of the day,
the best way to have done this section would have been take a train to either Acs or Komarom then cycle the last part we looked at our timings when we eventually arrived in Komarom and what we were capable of when we got to Komarom? it was gonna be a long day if we continued and we hoped for better trail but we both wanted to cycle it and by our timings should get to our destination before sundown,
by then we had made our decision no choice now we had to cycle to Esztergom and we chose to cycle on the Slovakian side of the Danube as the cycle paths looked better which for most parts they were we kept going all afternoon eventually arriving at the bridge into town at - 18:40 when the sun was on the horizon!
